Work Visa holders

Working while studying

You can work part-time, up to 20 hours per week, and full-time during scheduled holidays while on a student visa.

• Anyone currently being forced to work in New Zealand illegally for less than the minimum wage and/or excessive hours is advised to call the Labour Inspectorate on 0800 20 90 20. You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

International Students and Visas

As an international student, you are required by law to hold a valid visa and comply with your visa conditions for the duration of your study at the NZ School of Vocational Education and Training. It is your primary responsibility to maintain the lawful status to study and live in New Zealand.

To formally be enrolled, all students are required to upload a copy of a valid student visa to study at the NZ School of Vocational Education and Training, New Zealand. If you do not hold a valid student visa or fail to provide one, your student enrolment may be cancelled.

Applying for a Student Visa

International students must supply a study permit or visa as evidence of their right to study in New Zealand. The international applicant is responsible for complying with all conditions relating to the study visa or permit. You must apply directly to Immigration New Zealand for a STUDENT VISA or call Immigration NZ on +64 9 914 4100

It is important to apply for your student visa as soon as possible, as in some cases the application process may take a minimum of one month.

Attendance requirement

International students must have 100% attendance in all their scheduled classes unless there is a genuine and valid reason otherwise. Please get in touch with our Student Service and Supports Manager if you are unsure about what is deemed a valid reason. Failure to attend without a doctor's certificate or valid reason may result in the termination of your enrolment as outlined by Immigration New Zealand. International students are required to attend all lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, assessments and examinations required by the course in which they are enrolled to retain their right to study in New Zealand under a student visa. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the student’s enrolment with the New Zealand School of Vocational Education and Training being terminated and notification sent to Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

Any international student who is identified as at risk due to low attendance and/or attainment shall be supported as procedures and guidelines documented in the New Zealand School of Vocational Education and Training Quality Management Manual available on request.

Variation of conditions

You may be able to apply for a variation of conditions if you already hold a student visa, a work visa, or a visitor visa. Your application will only be granted if the new conditions would meet the immigration instructions your original visa was issued under.

Student visa holders

You may be able to apply for a variation of conditions to allow you to change the course you are studying and/or the education provider you are studying with, or to allow you to work part-time and/or full-time during your holidays. If you withdraw from your course of study and/or education provider before varying the conditions of your visa, you will be in breach of your visa conditions.

Attendance

100% attendance is required. Failure to attend may result in termination of enrolment.

Application Process

1. Apply for a place

• Please check you meet the academic and English language entry requirements listed under the country information page.

• Complete your application online and provide supporting documents.

• Download the application form to apply, please print in clear, legible English. Apply Now

Required documents

• Certified/notarised copy of personal details page from passport, or birth certificate.

• Original or certified photocopies of all previous transcripts and/or certificates (showing you meet the entry requirements).

• Certified/notarised translations of original documents are required when these are not in English.

• Notarised copy means a public notary has seen the original and a copy and has stamped and signed the copy to say that it is the same as the original document. If you are in Tauranga, you may bring the original document to the admissions staff to be sighted.

2. Wait for confirmation

We will acknowledge your application and start the interview process. We will require you to interview either in person if you are in Auckland or via phone or over Zoom. We will provide you with a time, date and a Zoom link.

If you meet the entrance criteria you will receive an offer of place, which includes an invoice and instructions on how to pay the tuition fees. If some documents are missing, a conditional offer of place may be given.

3. Pay your tuition fees

Pay your fees after you receive your offer of place letter. A receipt will be provided when the funds have been received by NZSVET. In some cases, tuition fees should be paid after obtaining an Approval in Principle (AIP) for your student visa.

Tuition fees and resource costs include:

• All tuition fees for classes.

• All lecture materials.

• Internet, photocopying and printing.

• Processing, recording and reporting of assessment results and personal data.

Expenses not included in your programme fees:

• Textbooks.

• General stationery items.

• Computer equipment including personal computers and/or tablets.

• Accommodation and meals.

• Medical and travel insurance.

• Travel expenses.

Fee protection

NZSVET complies with the Education and Training Act 2020. For your financial security, the fees will be placed in a trust fund as required by NZQA rules for tertiary providers. The trust fund used by NZSVET is the Public Trust. This is to ensure that your funds are secure in the unlikely event of insolvency, regulatory closure or withdrawal of accreditation from NZSVET.  

Any student fees greater than $500 NZD must be directly deposited into the NZSVET Public Trust account. All agents must ensure that student fees (including tuition fees, resource fees, insurance etc.) are deposited into the NZSVET student public trust accounts on receipt within 48 hours. No agent shall accept any fees from the student on behalf of NZSVET.

Fee Protection

Your fees are secured in a trust fund as required by NZQA.

Student Insurance

All students are required to have appropriate medical and travel Insurance as specified in The Education (Pastoral Care of tertiary and International learners) Code of Practice 2021.  All policies will be verified prior to the student’s enrolment. The policies available in New Zealand that meet New Zealand School of Vocational Education and Training requirements are:
