Equity and Access – Empowering Ability and Success

At the New Zealand School of Vocational Education and Training (NZSVET), we are committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and accessible learning environment for all ākonga (learners) with disabilities or impairments.

We encourage all students with disabilities or learning differences to contact our Student Support Services before beginning their studies. This early engagement helps us to identify, plan, and coordinate the support you may need to thrive throughout your learning journey.

When contacting us, please bring any relevant documentation related to your disability or impairment, as well as your course details and class timetable (if available).

Advice for Students with a Disability or Impairment

Planning ahead can make a big difference in your learning experience. Here are some important tips to help you get started:

Gather as much information as you can about your chosen course—its structure, workload, assessments, and practical components.

Get in touch with our Student Support Services before you enrol. Booking an early appointment allows us to discuss your needs and organise appropriate support in advance.

When you meet with us, please provide relevant evidence of your disability or impairment. This helps us understand your situation and tailor support to suit you.

Learn what services and adjustments are available to you. These may include assistive technologies, exam accommodations, note-taking support, and more.

Let us know what types of resources, formats, or arrangements might help you—such as alternative print materials, quiet exam rooms, or mobility access.

If possible, speak with students currently enrolled in your programme to learn about their experiences with the coursework, time management, and any challenges.

Take the initiative to address any issues as they arise. Our Disability Support team is here to help you navigate challenges, but your involvement is key.

If you need specific software or equipment, try to access it before your programme begins. Being familiar with tools like text-to-speech software or digital recorders will help you feel more confident from day one.

It’s important to understand your rights under the Human Rights Act 1993. If you need support interpreting this, our team is happy to help.

While we’re here to support you, your success will ultimately depend on your effort, engagement, and willingness to reach out when you need help.
